Last we heard....

Briar texted us last night to ask for help because she was LOST!

What had happened was the girls were on a train to Ancona, (which is where they will get a ferry to Croatia) and for some reason they decided to get off together. As Briars bag was somewhere else, Sora said take my bag and ill get yours so Briar hopped of the train and as soon as she did the doors immediately shut and the train with the other girls left without her.

The other bad part was Briar had her phone but also had Sora's phone in Sora's bag and so could only ring Rebecca who had no credit to recieve calls.

Luckily the girls on the train borrowed another passengers phone to call Briar and sorted out how to meet up. They decided they would get off at their next stop, Briar would get on the next train going to the same place and when it caught up to the girls they would jump on.

Luckily it all worked out and they are now safely in Ancona.

Briar was stranded at Orte station (A) and met back up with the girls at Narni station (B)- so not far apart, but it could have been worse!

Just for fun...

The last photos posted were of the girls here: The Fountain of the Naiads (river nymphs), although Becca tagged on FB that it was the Trevi Fountain.

Its not far to the Trevi so i imagine they went to both. Both are beautiful! but the Trevi is more famous.

The Trevi Fountain is well known for tourists throwing coins into it. The legend goes that if visitors throw coins into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Interestingly some people try to steal money out. This is because an estimated 3000 euros is thrown in everyday!

The money is collected daily and has been used to subsidise a supermarket for Rome's needy.

Just for fun...

Construction of the tower of Pisa occurred in three stages across 177 years. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning.
Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, because area was almost continually engaged in battles with GenoaLucca and Florence. This allowed time for the underlying soil to settle. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled.
On January 7, 1990, the tower was closed to the public. The bells were removed to relieve some weight, and anchor cables were added. The final solution to prevent the collapse of the tower was to slightly straighten the tower to a safer angle, by removing soil from underneath the raised end. The tower was straightened by 45 cm. The tower was then reopened to the public on December 15, 2001, and was declared stable for at least another 300 years
Further in May 2008, after the removal of more ground, engineers announced that the Tower had been stabilized such that it had stopped moving for the first time in its history. They stated it would be stable for at least 200 years.
All of this just means we have 200 more years to mock tourists pretending to hold up the tower!

The girls missed their first bus to Porto and ended up having to take a later bus in the night.

According to Briar:  “we missed out first bus so we had to get a later one and it's dark and there's weird guys that won't stop talking to us, was asking if he could charge his phone on my laptop and saying it's a nice laptop and them he came and sat next to me! It's scary and I'm scared he's going to take my stuff I put a password on my laptop tho so if they did he can't get in, they kept saying that we are beautiful and they kept staring at us” The bus however didn’t take them all the way into Porto so they needed to catch a taxi through to the airport. She tried to ring the cab company but the phone number she was trying was wrong which is why she got in contact with Nathan but when he told her what the correct number she should be dialling was, she got through but then the operator didn’t speak English. Fortunately when the bus stopped at its destination there was a whole rank of taxis waiting so they just jumped in one as quickly as they could. Apparently the guys were staring at them the whole time, she reported. So now they are off in a taxi to the airport Hotel in Porto.

Last we heard.....

We skyped on (our) Sunday night which was the girls last day in Portugal. They said after coming back from Spain they had planned a nice dinner with another family from the congregation as a bit of a farewell and had a rather late night (only going to sleep about 5am!).

Bri said their plan was to catch a bus that evening to Porto, stay in a hotel by the airport and the next day fly to Italy to meet Caitlin.

Last we heard...

The girls had a pretty harrowing experience in Spain with some druggies on the beach and one pulled a knife! Everyone got away ok though, but pretty shaken up!

Then heading back to Portugal, the bus they were on was stopped by the border patrol who were checking passports. Unfortunately Briar had forgotten to take her passport to Spain and so got yelled at and pretty much interogated by these big border partol guys who finally let her go after discussing her reputation with Lanie & Steve!

Scary times!
